APPTI
In 1992, a Department of Energy official visited leaders from the American Forest and Paper Association, asking whether the industry valued government research efforts in this sector. That inquiry led to a technology research consortium, launched in 1994 and announced publicly with Secretary of Energy Hazel O'Leary as the Agenda 2020 Technology Alliance. It was renamed APPTI in 2017.
The Alliance for Pulp and Paper Technology Innovation, a nonprofit, identifies high-priority, pre-competitive technology challenges for the pulp and paper industry and promotes scientific R&D projects addressing them.

Identify industry technology needs and R&D priorities.
Inform universities and government agencies about industry research needs and opportunities.
Promote collaborative R&D programs to seize these opportunities.
The initiatives are driven by a vision of the economic, energy, and resource efficiency achievable. This vision includes measurable industry goals aligned with national priorities: energy productivity, greenhouse gas reduction, healthy forest maintenance, and rural employment creation.
Certain major common challenges are too large for individual companies to tackle alone and are best addressed through cooperation among producers, suppliers, universities, and government agencies. Collaboration is pre-competitive, which lets companies achieve excellent leverage of their research expenditure and gain cost-effective access to critical research developments.
When a technology becomes commercial, APPTI steps out and members compete normally.

From the Agenda 2020 Technology Alliance to APPTI.
Concept established.
Launched as the forest products industry's Agenda 2020 Technology Alliance, a partnership between the American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) and the U.S. Department of Energy to identify breakthrough opportunities in manufacturing efficiency and sustainability.
Broadened membership and became a member-supported organization.
Released the 2006 Forest Products Industry Technology Roadmap.
Began serving as project manager for the Value Prior to Pulping biofuels program.
Released the 2010 Forest Products Industry Technology Roadmap.
Incorporated as an independent non-profit organization.
Partnered with Teledyne Scientific & Imaging on a DOE-funded R&D project for membrane concentration of black liquor.
Received IRS 501(c)(3) certification.
Launched action teams in five priority areas.
Launched projects on Press Section Modeling and Identification of New Delignification Catalysis.
Completed R&D roadmaps in each of the five priority areas; sponsored a black liquor concentration project at Georgia Tech.
Issued RFPs for Next-Generation Pulping; commissioned three new projects at Georgia Tech, University of Maine and North Carolina State University.
